Notions on the mechanical characteristics of wood and wood products for structural use, on the regulatory system for the use of structural wood, on the problems of assessment of wooden structures in site.

Skills in the field of use of wooden materials with load-bearing capacity, in the interaction with designers for project realizations, in the use of tools for mechanical tests and for non-destructive tests.
Skills acquired at the end of the course:
Ability to set up a process for the certification of wood and derived products for use in load-bearing structures, to evaluate wooden load-bearing structures in place, to select the structural material in building sites.

Courses of: Xylology; Elements of wood processing and derived products; Elements of mathematics and laboratory.

Course program
The four main kinds of wooden buildings. The Technical Rules for Construction. The CE marking. The visual / machine strength grading and the characterization of timber for structural use. Types of wood (geographical area of origin, cross sections and grade). Physical and mechanical characteristics of timber. National and European technical rules for structural use of wood. The defects and anomalies for the structural use (UNI 11035, EN 1912, EN 338, EN 14081, EN 14080). The technological inspection of ancient and recent wooden structures: aims and methods. UNI 11119.
